The walled town of Avallon was surrounded by twenty-towers in the year 1595. The smallest gate to the castle was placed under the protection of the Gaujard tower, from where archers could easily fire upon the enemy. We wandered through the town, enjoying views of the surrounding landscape, the clock tower and the Church of Saint Pierre.
