Appearing as a magnificent view on the horizon, the hilltop town of Vezelay has one of the most beautiful Abbeys we have seen. From its elevated position, the town offered stunning views of the surrounding countryside of fields, rivers, forests and red-roofed villages.
The village and church were added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1979.
Vezelay is one of the four starting points for the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela (the Way of St. James).
Tidbits: the abbey hosted the extended 1190 meeting between Richard I of England and Philip II of France, where they launched the Third Crusade.
