Our small apartment was just two block from the magnificent Basilica Santa Croce. In addition to the stunning facade, the interior of the church contains tombs for Italy’s most famous figures: Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Machiavelli, Rosinni, Galileo, Danti Allegheri, Guglielmo Marconi, Enrico Fermi and others.

In the back of the cathedral is a monastery where the Leather School of Florence was founded after WWII, to give orphans of the war a means to learn a practical trade with which to earn a living. Today the friars of the Monastery and members of the Gori family continue the tradition of high quality leather design. Francesca Gori’s bags have decorative closures with bobbles of silver, gold, semi-precious stones and other rare materials such as fossils, quartz, amber all from antique jewelry.
