Mount Field is one of Tasmania’s oldest national parks. We took our friends Karen and Guy to the walk around Lake Dobson where the extraordinary “Pandani” trees grow. We were also looking forward to seeing the autumn display of the gold, red and orange foilage of Australia’s only winter deciduous tree, the endemic ‘fagus’ (Nothofagus gunnii). Tasmanian rainforest plants contain some of the most ancient species of Australia’s flora. Their ancestors grew on the landmass of Gondwana 60 million years ago. Pandani trees (Richea pandanifolia) are found in Tasmania and nowhere else on Earth.
